GOLF-CLUB.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
rates-tea nee. a, race.
" "ttion filed May 27, 1908. Serial No. 435,189.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Fnnnnnicn E. RlGDEN,
in (lhieopee, in the State of Massachusetts,
line. The brass weight is not only titted I 7. suitable shape and is provided with a strik-i have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof; I
The object of this inventionis to increase the driving power of the golf club and this result attained by concentrating, as far as possible, the added weight of the head directly in line, both in a vertical plane and in a horizontal, with the center of the ball.
In carrying out this invention the rear side of the'hcad of the golf club is recessed somewhat deeply and 1n such recess is fitted a brass weightwhich is not only convex on its inner surface to fit therecess but is also cona subject of the King of England, residing l vex on its outer surface so that, being placed directly in rear of the striking-pointlof the face of the head, the center f gravity of saph weight is directly in line with such striliing point and therefore with the center of the ball and, moreover, the weight is concentrated as closely as possible about such snugly in its seat and provided with holding screws but it is also provided with a lug or projection which enters a seat in the wooden body of the head and prevents the brass weight from creeping while also helping to take the strain of? of the screws.
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accomi panying drawing in which it is illustrated and in which Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a golf club head which embodies the invention, and 2 is a view of the same in section on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The head a of the golf club to which the invention is applied may be of any usual or ing face by In the rear side of the body a of the wooden head is formed a recess, indicated by the line'c, concaved upon a relalg short rat ins and in such recess is fitted snugly a brass weight (I, which is a so W caved on its rear taco to continue the line of curvature of the head. This brass weight d is located, as shown in the drawing, directly in line withthe strikingiface of the head and with its center of gravity substantially in line, both in a vertical 'plane and in a horizonttl plane, with the striking point of the face 1 and therefore with the center of the ball. Furthermore, by usin ahard metal of high specific gravity, sum as brass, the
added weight is closely concentrated aboutthe line of impact so that such. weight is ap' plied to the best advantage and imparts to the club the highest; possible driving power. The brass weight is secured to the head by one or more screws, one of which is indicated by dotted lines at c in Fig. 2, and in order to take the strain off of such screws and to prevent the brass weight from creeping, the weight is provided with a lug or projection 7 which enters a corresponding recess 9 in the body of the head,
With this improved club a great distance on the drive can be secured and the metal weight will always remain exactly in osi lion, so that accuracy in driving is not ageetod by accidental shifting of the weight with respect to the body of the head.
i claim my invention:
' in a golf club, a head comprising a'wooden body portion having a concave recess formed in its rear face and extending vertically throughout the thickness of said head; a weight seated in said recess andextending vertically througl'iout the. thickness of said head whereby the surfaces of said head and weight are continuous and; the weight serves also to protect the head from wear, the center of gravity or said weight being 111 line j with the striking point on theforward face 1 of the head; and means for secur ng said weight in position within said recess.
This specification signed and witnessed this 25th day of May, A. 1)., 1908.
