Abstract

24,820. Sowden, A. Nov. 12. Junction boxes.-A junction box for use with underground electric cables is divided into two or more compartments 1, Figs. 1 and 2, round a central compartment 2 by means of shutters 10, which slide on guides projecting from the bottom of the box. The shutters 3 on the outer sides of the compartments 1 are made hollow and with oil channels in their upper edges corresponding with similar channels 6 on the box, the object being to form an oil seal with a rib 7 on the cover 8. The cover is fitted with handles 8<A>, and is secured by bolts in lugs 9. The cables 5 enter the compartments 1 through divided insulators 4 held by the shutters 3, and are connected together in any desired manner by meaus of bus-bars 12, which pass out of the central compartment through similar insulators 11. The bus-bars are separated by broad insulating-pieces 13, and are bolted to a central insulating-support 14. Each cable is connected to its proper bar 12 by means of slotted lugs 16, connecting-bars 17, and bolts 18. Insulators 19 are placed under these connections. The frame 20, Fig. 8, of the manhole of the junction box sits with its lower flange 21 on the brickwork setting, and is provided with an internal channel 22 for draining off water towards an outlet 23. The manhole cover is recessed and partitioned off into compartments 26, which are filled with cement &c., and is formed with an underlying draining- channel 28 leading to the channel 22 and outlet 23. Air-ways 27, 29 in the cover and channel 28 afford access of the external air to the junction box. The junction box is, as usual, filled in with insulating-material to above the level of the cables.
