Abstract

21,019. Wilson, L. Sept. 26. Propulsion, controlling from a distance; steering from outside vessel.-Relates to the propelling, steering, and performing or controlling of various other functions in submarine and other vessels. The transmitters, attuned or syntonized in unison with the receivers on the vessel, may be upon a vessel or upon land, and the controlled submarine or other vessel has its mechanisms actuated each by an electric motor and battery upon the vessel, and the movement of each motor and the resulting operation of its mechanism is initiated by means controlled by the corresponding receiver upon the vessel. A submarine boat is shown in longitudinal section in Fig. 1, in sectional plan in Fig. 2, and in cross-section in Fig. 3. The propeller a is driven by the motor a' worked through the receiver e, the switch n<2>, the electromagnet n', the switch n, and the battery f ; the vertical and horizontal rudders c, c<x> are operated by motors c<1>, c<11>, through the medium of similar receivers and switches. The receivers e, e<1>, ... e<8>1 when operated, bring into play relay mechanism for carrying the motor operating currents. A propeller-reversing gear g is provided, the reversing-motor j being actuated by the receiver e<1>. The reversing-screw i is turned through the friction discs k, and actuates the lever h of the reversing-gear. Similar reversing- gears are inserted at g<1>, g<2> in the mechanism for actuating the vertical steering-rudder c and the horizontal guiding-rudder c<x>. The collecting- wires may be sustained above the surface of the water by a cork float, and the float may be furnished with a receiving-kite.
