Abstract
20,129. Higgins, C. J. Sept. 15. Bandages ; pads ; dressings. - Relates, more particularly, to bandages employed for the protection of the end of the umbilical cord in the newly-born infant. A pad 5 is formed of an inner and outer layer of cloth 6 with an intervening layer of waterproof material, such as rubber-faced cloth or oiled silk. The stump of the cord is passed through an opening 8 in the pad, and a piece of soft fabric 9 saturated with an antiseptic is placed over it. A piece of waterproof material 10 covers the fabric 9, and ventilating- apertures 11 are formed in both the waterproof material and the fabric. In order to hold the bandage or protector in position, an abdominal band 12 is employed, which conforms to the shape of the body and is provided with shoulder straps 13. The lower portion is gathered or plaited at 14 to fit the abdomen and prevent upward movement. The pad 5, if made on a much larger scale and without perforations, may be used as a receiving-pad in accouchement. An absorbent layer of cotton &c. may, in this case, be placed between one of the outer cloth layers and the layer of waterproof material.
