Abstract

18,433. Friestedt, L. P. Aug. 21. Tunnels and tunnelling.-Relates to metal sheetpiling built up in sections and composed of channelbeams interlocking and joined together by means of angle plates or bars and applicable to the construction of docks, wharfs, sea-walls, caissons, coffer-dams, bulkheads, and other submarine work, and in the sinking of foundations for buildings, in pier work, and in circular work, such as piers or excavations for foundations and tunnels. The sheet-piling comprises the beams A, B, Fig. 1, having interlocking flanged edges 14, 15, the joining faces of the flanges being bevelled, and presenting a single wall at all points. The outer corner of the joint is strengthened by the Z-bar C, and the wood plates D are set to a close bearing against the flanges of the beam B or an interposed packing or corking. A metal angle-plate may be substituted for the wood plates D. The bolt holes 19, Fig. 4, of the plates D are elongated to allow for lateral expansion. A driven sheetbacking or partition is shown in Fig. 10. A driving point or wedge, Fig. 8, provided with a triangular neck 29, is employed in driving.
