Abstract

15,880. Dickson, W. K. L., and Cuccotti, G. A. July 16. Revolving-cylinder type compound.-F'igs. 1 and 2 show a simple engine having four cylinders, the pistons of which are connected, by pivoted bars o to rods u, jointed to straps s, rotating on fixed eccentrics r, r. Steam is distributed by the tapered plug k, about which the cylinder-hub rotates. By rotating the plug through a quarter of a revolution, by means of the lever 8, the engine is reversed. The plug is pressed inwards to make a steam-tight joint by the shell y, which is drawn towards the engine casing by springs. In compound engines, the low-pressure cylinders are arranged alongside the high-pressure cylinders, and the steam may be distributed by two plugs such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or by a single plug, having the requisite ports and passages. The Provisional Specification states that a compound motor may be made by arranging two engines side by side, one being pro- vided with larger cylinders than the other. Steam from the high-pressure engine is passed to the other through the tubular shaft. It also describes one arrangement in which a sleeve is placed between the plug and the cylinder hub. Ports in this sleeve may be made to register more or less exactly with those in the hub, by rotating the sleeve by means of a screw. The steam may be supplied to, and exhausted from, the plug by means of flexible tubing instead of by the means shown. The engines are particularly applicable for driving motor cars.
