Abstract

15,673. Wood, W. O., and Miller, J. H. July 14. Undercutting &c. -Relates to mining- machinery of the chain-cutter type, means for shifting them horizontally and for lifting them to cut at any desired height, and to attachments for drilling the shot-holes, and for removing the cuttings. The stationary frame a carries the sliding framework c, on which is mounted the driving and other mechanism. The crank shaft e of the engine is geared to a second motion shaft 8, to which the vertical shaft of the cutter-chain driving-wheel is geared by the bevel-wheels 5. The feed and quick return are effected by pinions 14 engaging racks b on the fixed frame c and driven through a clutch o either by the double worm gear 12, 7 or by worm and bevel gear s, p from the second motion shaft 8. Lifting-screws u work through nuts v fixed about the middle of the frame a or sliding frame, and can be turned by a simple or rachet lever w. The nut may have a catch to drop into grooves in the screw to lock it. The lower ends of the screws may be forked or provided with swivelling castors y, on which the machine may be moved or raised for the insertion of supplementary supporting frames z. The machine may be shifted laterally on a rack or worm 16 by means of a pinion or nut and worm gear mounted at 18 in a box on the frame, the rack &c. 16 being adjustable in height on jack screws u, Fig. 4. Or the frame of the machine may have a box 20 attached into which racks 24 can be entered laterally or endwise so that an enclosed gearing can mesh with them to move the machine towards a prop &c. 26 to which the rack is connected. By another arrangement, a drum on the main or other shaft hauls on to an anchored rope, guide-pulleys being used if the point of attachment is out of the direct line of pull. By still another arrangement, the machine is pulled or pushed in any direction by a pneumatic cylinder provided with a valve or a disconnectible hose to supply air to the pressure end. The cuttings fall into a hopper 37, and are conveyed to the rear by an air jet through the pipe 38. Laying dust in mines.-The pipe 38 may be provided with a water spray to lay dust at the point of delivery. Rock drills, rotary. The undercutting-machine described above has a rotary drill h driven by bevel gear 3 or bevel gear and spur gear 41 from the main shaft e, and passing through a steady block 47 on the front of the sliding carriage. The frame carrying the gear 41 and the block 47 may be angularly adjustable about the centre of the lowest pinion 41, and held by bolts in curved slots of a bracket 45. A drill may also be mounted on the spindle of the pinion 41.
