Abstract

15,355. Kessler, F. July 9. Extracts.-An apparatus for use in extracting materials from dye-woods, tanning-substances, and wool, comprises a U-shaped chamber D through which the crushed or sliced substances are forced by means of archimedean screws B, C, and E, which are mounted at the inlet and outlet ends respectively. The water or solution employed for extracting the materials phases through a pipe into a jacket G' whence the liquid flows through the chamber D ; when it has flowed through about one-half the length of the chamber, the liquid is withdrawn by means of a pump M through a heater L whence it returns to the chamber through a jacket K<2>. The extract in that part of the chamber surrounding the screw B is withdrawn by means of a pump m through a jacket K<1> and heater and returned t: the chamber through a jacket K<2> ; a partial vacuum may be maintained in the upper part of the heater. The extract is finally withdrawn through a jacket N. The exhausted substance passes through apertures fitted with valves F, but a large proportion of the liquid is withdrawn from the exhausted mass, before it is discharged, by means of pumps J<1>, J', connected to jackets H', H<2> respectively. The extracted liquid is returned to the chamber through the jacket G<1>. In a modified form of the apparatus, there are two or more chambers, which may be straight instead of U-shaped, connected together.
