Abstract

14,679. Rinne, H. July 1. Rolling.-A machine for cold-rolling the ends of boiler fire-tubes, and other tubes, to a definite size, is provided with an internal roll n, Fig. 1, and an annular roll a, adjustable to the required size. The faceplate f and the roll a are rotated by means of the pinion e, and are mounted on a sliderest o, but the roll n, alone or together with the roll a, may be driven, and the standard l or roll n may be capable of being moved laterally. The roll or ring a is cut through in one or more places, is notched on its outer surface, and is surrounded by the segments b of a conical ring, which in turn is surrounded by another conical ring c. One or more wedges or pieces are placed between the ends of the ring or parts of the ring a, which is then contracted to the required size by drawing the ring c downwards by means of the screws g and the nuts h, which carrv pinions i, engaging with the annular wheel k. The wheel k usually rotates with the faceplate f, but, when the ring c is to be raised or lowered, the wheel k is fixed by means of a pawl m, and the plate f rotated in the necessary direction. When the expanded tube fills the ring a, the ring is allowed to expand, and the tube p is removed. Pieces of metal may be placed between the rings a, b, c.
