Abstract

14,426. Duffield, J., Bennett, J. F., and Moorwood, H. S. June 25. Carburetting.-Light and heavy oils, alcohol, and other volatile liquids are admitted to the carburetter through a hand-regulated valve c and flap valve a. The valve c has one or two taper parts such as c<2> by which the relative quantities of liquid and air may be admitted. The mixture passes through a heating-coil e to another mixing- chamber l having a block m with radial passages through which the mixture passes. A supplementary supply of air may enter through the valve n. The heater e is heated at starting by a lamp j, or by burning spirit beneath it ; spirit may be used for carburetting also at this stage. After starting, exhaust gases from a motor may pass through a central flue h and the casing e<1> be connected to the cylinder water jacket, or contain a liquid which boils at certain temperatures, and which is expelled by its vapour into a tank when this temperature is reached. The temperature is thus kept constant. Air only may be heated in the coil e. Afloat feed may be used for the liquid instead of, or in addition to, the valve c.
