Switches.-Porcelain pockets containing the terminals are provided with openings on opposite sides, and an S-shaped lever with metal end pieces makes contact between the terminal pieces in the pockets. The object is to prevent arcing between the terminals, or between the metal parts and the terminals. A double-pole singlebreak switch is shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The leads or mains are connected to terminals having spring contacts 21, 22 between a spring clip, which the metal end pieces 18 of the switch lever enter, thus closing the circuit. Each main is led through a hole 6 in the wall of the pocket, and connected with its terminal piece by binding- screws 25, 25. A coil spring is provided for giving a quick-break contact. In a single-pole doublebreak switch, the lever is of conducting-material. For a single-break single-pole switch, one pocket is sufficient ; the switch lever forms part of the circuit, and is used as the other terminal for the main. The porcelain base may have walls and a cover of the same material or the wall may only extend in front of the openings of the pockets. Instead of the walls being formed in piece with the base, a porcelain cover with deep sides may be used to cover up the parts upon the base. The porcelain pockets and their covers may also be in one piece, or the pockets may form part of the base and be provided with detachable caps.
