Abstract

12,479. Kempshall, E. May 31. Moulding b a l ls.- Golf &c. balls are made with a core of soft rubber, which is compressed within an outer hard shell. In one arrangement, a seamless hollow sphere 2 of soft rubber is partly filled with gutta - percha, which is preferably introduced in a fluid condition by means of a funnel. After the funnel has been withdrawn, the hole is plugged and the sphere is enclosed in hemispherical shells 7, 8 of gutta-percha, celluloid, &c., which are then compressed and welded upon it in heated dies 9, 10. The compression reduces the sphere from the size indicated by dotted lines to that shown in full lines, thus forming the gutta-percha into a solid centre-piece 1. The centre-piece need not be of hard or solid material.
