Abstract

2302. Kempshall, E. Jan. 28. Moulding balls.-Balls for golf, billiards, &c. are made as follows :-A hollow india-rubber shell A<3>, Fig. 3, is placed in a divided mould E, F, and gutta-percha L or other compound is forced into it through a tube H by a plunger K, so as to expand the shell until it fills the hollow of the mould. Air from the shell escapes through outlets M, N, and from the mould through an outlet T. When the gutta-percha or other filling-material escapes from the outlet N, this outlet is closed by a screw, and pressure is continued. The core is allowed to solidify whilst in the mould. The filled shell is then removed and covered with two celluloid hemispheres 1, Fig. 2, which are compressed upon it by means of a divided mould 3, 4, so as to cause them to unite. The surface of the ball may be smooth, pebbled, &c.
