Abstract

12,477. Kempshall, E. April 15, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Moulding balls. -- Balls for golf &c. are made with a compressed core of soft rubber enclosed in casings of celluloid, gutta-percha, &c. The core consists of a sphere of rubber with a central chamber which communicates with the exterior by an air duct. The core, enclosed in hemispheres of celluloid or gutta-percha, is compressed in heated moulds, so that it forms a solid core A<1>, Fig. 5, with an envelope C. Strips of celluloid lined with fabric are then wound in all directions over the ball, the layers where they cross being connected by cementing &c. The whole ball is finally compressed in heated moulds L, M, so as to compress the outer casing into a uniform layer. The moulds are shaped to give a brambled surface to the ball.
