Abstract

12,437. Bloxam, A. G., [Norddeutscher Lloyd]. May 31. Bulkhead doors. -By the present improvements on the invention described in Specification No. 15,516, A.D. 1901, several bulkhead doors can be operated from a common controlling-station, such as the bridge of a ship, while a single door, which may be opened locally for the escape of an entrapped person, is s subsequently closed automatically. The hydraulic cylinder M', M<2>, M<3>, and the coupled valves H<o>, H<u>, for each door T<1>, T<2>, T<3>, are connected by branch pipes 7, 8 to the two mains 2, 4, which, by means of the valve at the controlling- station C, can be placed in communication with either the pipe 1 of the compressed-air and water accumulator A or with the pipe 3 of the exhaust tank E, the pipe 3 being also directly connected to cylinders M<1>, M<2>, M<3> by branch pipes 9. When the valve at the controlling-station C is turned to the "open" position, Fig. 3, and the coupled local valves H‹, H" occupy the respective positions shown, the upper end of the cylinder M<1> is placed in communication with the accumulator A by the pipes 1, 4, 7, 5, and the lower end with the exhaust tank E by the pipes 6. 9, 3, and the door T' will remain closed ; whereas the door T<2> will open when the lower end of the cylinder M<2> is placed in connection with the accumulator A by the pipes 1, 4, 7, 6 and the upper end with the exhaust tank E through the pipes 5, 8, 2, the valve at C, and the pipe 3. In Fig. 4, in which the valve at the controlling-station C is turned to the " closed" position, both ends of the cylinder M' are in communication with the exhaust, and the door T<1> remains closed, while the upper end of the cylinder M<2> is connected with the accumulator by the pipes 5, 8, 2, and the lower with the exhaust through the pipes 6, 7, 4, the controlling-valve at C,.and the pipe 3. To enable an entrapped person to escape and the door to be subsequently closed automatically, each door, such as T<3>, is fitted with a small supplementary cylinder M<4> , and with the arrangement shown in Figs. 6 and 8, by which the local valves H‹, H" can be temporarily uncoupled. The slotted lever S on the valve H<o> engages with a pin P<1> on the rack R, which gears with the segment S' on the valve H<u>`. The pin P<2>, which normally limits the downward movement of the rack R, can be removed, and the valve H<a> opened by the handle G' by an entrapped person, thus placing the lower end of the cylinder M<3> in communication with the accumulator through the pipes 2, 8, 6, and opening the door, which is again closed when the rack R is raised to its normal position by the pressure in the cylinder M<4>. The valve H" is preferably a fourway valve, in which a circumferential groove h in the plug H<11>, Fig. 5, can be placed by a longitudinal slot k in communication with either of the passages h<7>, h<8>, h<9>.
