Abstract

10,978. Hutchings, W. E. May 13. Cranes.-Consists of an apparatus for unloading a ship on to the quay or into another ship, and carried entirely by the ship which is being unloaded. An inclined boom A, forming a track for a trolley J, is hinged and pivoted to the deck at E, and is stayed by guys G, so that it is capable of lateral and vertical movement. A rope N secured to the trolley passes round a pulley on the grab bucket M, and thence round the pulley P on the trolley, and pulleys Q, R, S to a winding-drum. The rope for opening and closing the bucket follows the same course to a second drum. In operation, the bucket is closed, and is then hoisted by both ropes until it reaches the trolley J. The further winding of both ropes draws the trolley up to the stop L<1> at the outer end of the boom, and, on then slacking the bucket-controlling line, the bucket is discharged. Slacking of both lines allows the empty bucket to return by gravity to the stop L. The boom A is preferably of I-section, with the trolley running astride of its bottom flange, Fig. 3.
