The invention is described in connection with a four-cylinder four-stroke cycle engine for motor cars, two cylinders of which may be worked by compressed air at starting or on reversing by means of the valve gear shown. The exhaustvalve levers 18 are, for starting, brought into the path of both the high and low swells on their cams 24 on the countershaft 37, while the lever 42 of the piston air-distributing-valve 5, Fig. 2, is brought into the path of the cam 22, Fig. 4. The levers 18, 42 may be worked through a rocking- shaft 20 controlled by a rod 26, which also controls the outlet valve 2 from the air reservoir 1. For reversing, the wheel 32, by which the shaft 37 is driven from the crank shaft, may be shifted through a right-angle so as to alter the phase of the cams. This is done by means of a helical sleeve 43, which is controlled either by a band-lever, or, according to the Provisional Specification, by a governor as well. The cams may act directly on the exhaustvalve spindles which may be lengthened or shortened by a screw coupling 55. 56, Fig. 5, worked by a rack and pinion.
