Punching-machines for straps &c.-The punch bar 4 is reciprocated in a longitudinal slot 6 in a frame 3, which can swing laterally about the shaft 14 carrying the hand-wheel 15 and a cam 13 for operating both the punch bar and the swinging frame. The punch bar is connected with the cam 13 through a lever 9, carrying two pins 10, 11 eccentric with one another and on opposite sides of the lever. One of the pins carries the roller for engaging with the cam-groove, and the other engages in an aperture in the punch bar. The lever may be turned as desired for regulating the height of the punch, and is clamped in the adjusted position by reason of a spring detent on the lever engaging with a toothed segment 47 secured to the bar. The swinging movement of the frame 3 is effected through the cam roller 35 and lever 40, which is connected with the frame 3 by the adjustable link 43. The machine is provided with the vertically-adjustable punch block 27, the spring pressure plate 16, 16<a>, adjustable side guides 18 mounted on right and left handed screw threads on an adjustable rod, and a spring presser-foot for removing the punched strap from the punch when the latter rises. The bed 1<a> on which the strap &c. is supported forms part of a circle concentric with the shaft 14. The sequence of movements is as follows:-The punch is moved vertically downwards to punch the hole ; it is then raised slightly to clear the die, and the material is carried forwards by the swinging of the punch and frame 3 to the extent desired ; the punch is then withdrawn clear of the work and swung back to slightly beyond the vertical line, and then again exactly to the vertical line, ready for the next punching operation.
