8392. Crossman, J. G. April 10. Filter-presses.-Consists of an improved filter and extracting press such as is used in filtering wort. The frame a is pivoted on hollow trunnions, and the press can thus be tilted as required, or put in a vertical position when the supply of liquor being treated is insufficient to fill the frames completely. The frame a has an extensible end 9, 10, the limbs 10 of which slide between rollers 8 in guides 7 and have forked ends 12 engaging ribs 13. The frames and plates when in the frame a are guided by rollers, Fig. 6, engaging ribs on the inner sides of the limbs 10, and, when they are pulled beyond the frame a in opening the press, these rollers run between guides connected with the extension 9, 10. The frames h and plates i are formed with bosses which, when the press is closed, form external inlet and outlet pipes. The bosses l, communicating with the interior of the frames h, form the inlet pipes, and the bosses q, r, communicating with opposite sides of the plate i, form the outlet and wash-water pipes. The plates i are formed with diagonal corrugations p, and plain filter cloths are stretched between these plates and the frames h. In operation, the wort or other liquor to be treated is forced in by the hollow trunnion, pipe 3, and pipe l, and the filtered liquid escapes by one or both of the pipes q, r. At one end, the pipes q, r connect by a three-way cock 2 to a pipe leading to the other hollow trunnion, through which, when the filter is full, wash-water is introduced, the cock 2 being turned so that this wash-water enters one of the pipes q, r, and, after passing through the cakes, escapes by the other. Each of the bosses forming the pipes q, r is fitted with a cock, so that any filter cloth may be cut out, if desired.
