Abstract

4309. Carr, W. Feb. 20. Warp beams.-A warp beam, such as is used in looms and warping, beaming, and dressing machines, comprises a central shaft a upon which are loose flanges d having their inner or opposed faces grooved, to receive the ends of a tube or barrel f, while pins or feathers g in the grooves engage with the ends of a longitudinal slot h formed in the tube or barrel. The warps are attached to a rod l connected by cords, tapes, chains, bands, or the like k to grooved discs i splined to the shaft a. Notches m, for receiving the rod l, are formed in the edges of the discs i. When the warps are wound upon the beam, the cords &c. k are first wound up so that the rod l lies within the tube or barrel f, and then the warps are wound upon the latter. During the unwinding of the warps, the barrel and shaft rotate together, being connected by means of the rod l, until the last wrap of the warp has been withdrawn when the rod l is pulled through the slot h, and the shaft rotates without the barrel. By these means, the extreme ends of the warps may be drawn nearly up to the healds, as shown in Fig. 4, and the amount of waste is reduced.
