Abstract

3656. Thompson & Norris Manufaoturing Co., [Chapin, W. G.]. Feb. 12. Paper tubes.- Relates to machines for folding, glueing, and cutting off cartons, or tubes made from creased paperboard, to be used for packing purposes. The machine is shown in Fig. 1, the delivery and cutting end of the machine in Fig. 3, the gripping-device of the feed-mechanism in Fig. 9, and the completed expanded carton Y in Fig. 13. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the cutting-mechanism, and Fig. 15 shows one of rotary folding-rollers 2 mounted on the disc-like base 2<a> which is rotatably mounted in the bearer 3. The paper-board strip a passes over the discs 2<a> and the marginal flaps y are gradually turned up and in and folded down. The strip then passes under the fixed guides 6 and under the flattening-roller 7. The hinging-strip z is fed to the glue-applying roller 9 and down to the guide 11, where it is applied to the carton strip. Beyond the guide 11, the folded carton strip passes under the steam heater or dryer 13, which rests on the strip while the strip is stationary, and is raised from the strip by the cam 15 on the shaft 16 while the strip is being fed forwards by the gripper carriage 38. The heater 13 may be raised when required by hand. The glue or gum roller 9 and the shaft 16 are driven by belts or chains from the main driving-shaft 26 of the machine. The feeding-mechanism consists of the grippers 42, 43, Fig. 9, with means for opening and closing the jaws and means for moving the grippers to and fro for intermittently feeding the carton strip. The feed-crank has an adjustable wrist to vary the crank throw, and the square shaft 50 is driven from the shaft 26 through the bevel gears 52. The cam 49 slides along and rotates with the shaft 50, and holds the jaws closed while feeding. The cutting-mechanism comprises the knife-gate 55 which carries the knife 57 to cut the strip supported on the broad extremity 29<a> of the bed 29. The presser-foot 58 holds the carton strip firmly while being cut. The strip bearers 3 are made curved to fit the strip and afford a proper support.
