Abstract

1369. Mountford, F. Jan. 18. Glazing; enamelling.-Tiles j or articles of pottery, glass, metal, or the like, are carried by an intermittentlyrotating frame c" over a number of radially-arranged boxes or receptacles o containing different colours or glazes, which are applied through stencil plates n<111> with the desired patterns or designs. The frame c" receives a simultaneous rising-and-falling and rotary motion on a fixed shaft a<111> from a cam c, formed with zig-zag peripheral grooves engaging with rollers b<111> on fixed studs. The cam is raised into engagement with the rollers by a sleeve and a forked weighted lever h, acted on by a cam driven by worm gearing g from the main shaft e, and drops out of engagement when the lever is freed and the tiles are in position over the glazing-tanks. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for supplying liquid glaze or colour to the tiles by means of two stationary brush sections o', which are fed with the liquid and vibrated by means of troughs or brushes p carried by arms of the spindles o<11>, which are rotated intermittently from the main shaft by a clutch f, Fig. 2, beve gearing r, and individual clutches and spur-wheels. Weighted arms q<111> fixed to the spindles o<11> prevent the brushes from coming in contact with one another. The clutch f is thrown into and out of action by a weighted lever s, acted on by a cam s<1> driven from the main shaft by a sliding friction wheel s<111> adjustable by a screwed rod and lever t. The boxes o are arranged to slide in casings n, and can be locked by pins with the individual driving- clutches in or out of action. The colour is kept at a constant level in the box by a supply tank and a feeding arrangement consisting of an endless travelling band, a scraper, and a shoot. The colour in the supply tank is kept in a state of agitation by vanes driven by the endless band. A mottled or marbled effect is produced by a circular brush which is made with the bristles or strips of different lengths, and is moved in horizontal guides by an endless chain, crank, lever, and a pinion gearing with a fixed rack. Fig. 9 shows a method of gripping a single tile by means of pins l<111> projecting from lever arms l<1>, which are opened by a sliding rod k<1> and links l and closed by a spring k<111>. The plates j<1>, with the gripping-devices, are inserted in recesses d<11> in the frame c<11> and secured by pins through holes j<111>. The rods and levers may be duplicated to grip two, or four tiles, or the tiles may be gripped between ribs of the plate j<1> and a sliding bar attached to a spring push rod. The stencil plates are cleaned by horizontal brushes, which are swung on vertical pivots by tappets of the frame c", and are retracted by springs.
