Abstract

Alarms operated by expansion of gases. - In fire-alarms of the type in which expansion of air in a chamber 1, forces out the corrugated wall of a dilatable chamber 3 to engage a contact 30 and close an electric alarm circuit, improved means for amplifying the movement of the flexible wall of the chamber 3 are provided. A member 40 oscillates about screw points 41, 42 and has a transverse arm 44 engaging one or more superposed washers 45 on the chamber 3, a rod 46 on the oscillating member 40 actuating a toothed sector 47 engaging a pinion 48. The spindle 49 of this pinion is spring-controlled to maintain the amplifying element in operative engagement and carries a contact arm 50 adapted to engage. a fixed contact. Adjustment is effected by varying the number of washers 45. The device is mounted on the chamber 1 by means of screwthreaded yokes 43 secured by nuts 53, 54 to a plate 6. Specification 182,421 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes a venting-device to compensate for normal variations of temperature, such device consisting of a capillary tube 31 opening at 32 to the interior of the chamber 1 and at 33 to the atmosphere, the orifice 33 being covered if desired by a washer 34 of wadding &c. The tube 31, instead of being straight, may be of coiled form. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
