Abstract
26,465. Lake, H. H., [Chemical Works, formerly Sandoz]. Dec. 27. Dyes, artificial.-Black sulphur dyes for cotton are produced by heating 1 :3 : 4-dinitrophenol, or the corresponding nitroamido or diamidophenol, with an aqueous solution of an alkali hyposulphite at 150‹-170‹ C. in an autoclave for several hours. The product separates in the form of a black crystalline powder. It is insoluble in water, dilute acids, sodium carbonate, benzene, aniline, or strong sulphuric acid, but it dissolves easily in soda lye and alkali sulphides. It dyes cotton, in a bath containing sodium sulphide and common salt, black shades fast to washing, alkalies, acids, and light.
