Contacts, electric; signals on engines and trains ; signalling to cabins and stations; fog and audible signals.-Relates to means, for use during fogs &c., for signalling between a signal station and the driver, guard, &c. of a railway train, tramcar, &c. A conducting rail or wire is mounted on suitable insulators parallel to the track, and is engaged by a brush or other contact on the engine or car, which is also provided with a suitable signal apparatus connected to the brush &c., the track conductor being in electrical connection with the signalling-station. With this arrangement, signals can be transmitted to the driver &c. so long as the train contact is on the track conductor. Provision may also be made to enable the driver &c. to acknowledge the signals received, or to transmit signals to the signal station. The signals may be transmitted by a bell code, or they may be given by means of a semaphore, coloured lamps, &c. arranged to be actuated by currents of different intensities.
