Abstract

24,856. Born, A. Dec. 5. Cleaning fabrics, fibres, and the like.-Relates to a procees and apparatus for cleansing, scouring, or removing oil and fat from wool, hair, bristles, and other materials (including yarns and fabrics) by means of a powdered absorbent earth. The process consists in first evenly powdering the material by means of a current of air in a state of agitation, and afterwards freeing the material from the powder by beating or rinsing. The wool or material is carried by means of an endless band e to the feeding-opening of a suitable beating-machine, before entering which it meets with a supply of absorbent earth fed in regulated quantity from a hopper a. It passes into the machine between the rollers g, and is subjected therein to the action of a number of revolving beaters h, while a strong current of air is drawn through by an exhauster or fan. The feeding-opening is covered in by a hood i, so as to prevent escape of dust. A portion of the saturated earth falls through a sieve k into a box, and is removed therefrom by a screw conveyer l for further use. The remainder is carried on by the air current through a very fine sieve, kept clean by a revolving brush or fan o, into a conduit leading to a dust catcher of any suitable construction. The complete removal of the powder from the wool is effected either in a beating-machine or, preferably, by rinsing it with water.
