Abstract

19,985. Hancox, E. Oct. 7. Forging; flanging; stamping.-Relates to the securing of joint-rings or sleeves, sockets, or flanges to metal pipes, and to apparatus in connection therewith. The pipe end is first upset as shown in Fig. 1, a, and the socket, sleeve, or flange is then fitted to the pipe by a press or machine. The pipe is held in the device shown in part in Fig. 10, in which the grips u are adjustable, vertically and horizontally. The machine for upsetting the end of the pipe to form the annular rib a is shown in Fig. 4, and comprises the shaft G on which is fixed the head or disc S carrying the upsetting-rollers n, the sleeve H in gear with the shaft, the mandrel p, and the shaft K and nut J. When the nut J is rotated, the shafts K and G are moved forwards, the mandrel p is forced into the pipe, and the head S is then rotated from the shaft through the pinions and sleeve H. For closing the joint of the parts the hydraulic machine shown in Figs. 11 and 12 is employed. It consists of the clamping- jaws B, B<1>, carrying the closing-tools b in semicircular recesses, pivoted at d, and closed by the ram D pressing on the top cross-plate of the frame C hung from the upper jaw B by a bolt. After compression, the locking-frame C is swung outwards by the handle Q and the jaws are opened. The closing-tools are shaped to correspond with the part to be fixed on to the upset pipe. One of the clamping-jaws may be provided with a ram which, through the bearing-block w, transmits pressure to one of the closing-tools, and so applies local pressure to the joint-ring or sleeve. The ram D may be dispensed with, and the jaws may be held together by any suitable locking-device.
