Abstract

19,036. Frasch, H. A. Sept. 24. Alkaline carbonates and hydrates.-The hydroxide of a metal, capable of forming an insoluble double salt with ammonia and sodium chloride, is caused to react with an alkaline-chloride solution, whereby this metallic salt is precipitated and a solution of caustic alkali remains. The production of such an insoluble salt, namely, a nickel-ammonium chloride, is described in Specification No. 284, A.D. 1901. To obtain an alkaline carbonate, the carbonate of the metal may be used instead of the hydrate. The ammonia may be added to the nickel hydrate or carbonate, or to cobalt or other like hydrate or carbonate, and the sodium or potassium chloride added ; or it may be added to brine, and the nickel or other hydrate or carbonate added to the solution ; or, finally, the nickel hydrate may be saturated with anhydrous ammonia, and brine added. The precipitated double chloride may be treated with milk of lime, the free ammonia distilled off for re-use, and the nickel or other hydrate separated from the liquid for re-use.
