Abstract
17,629. Pietsch, G. A. H. Sept. 3. Manumotive cycles; driving-mechanism; frames; saddles and seats; steering-mechanism.-Relates to driving-mechanism of bicycles and tricycles operated by the arms, legs, and body motion of the occupant. The rear wheel of the bicycle shown in Fig. 3 is chain-driven from the sprocket-wheel M, which is rotated by a connecting-rod K pivoted at its front end to a lever A carrying the handle-bars C. The bottom of the lever A passes freely through a transverse member F, which oscillates slightly in bearings formed in the frame and which is secured to cranks or treadle-levers G carrying pedals. The member F has a slot A<1>, Fig. 3, in which turns a collar D rigidly secured to the lever A. The collar is provided with lateral extensions E, which are connected by rods P to a pivoted transverse bar B, the ends of which are connected by rods P<1> to steering-extensions T on the front axle. The spring-supported saddle rests on a carriage V provided with four wheels W, which run on the two top tubes X of the frame, an under strap Y preventing displacement.
