Abstract

14,983. Jensen, T. July 23. Capsizing, preventing; wind balances. - Relates to means for preventing sailing boats from capsizing. On an axis passing through, or near, the metacentre of the boat is pivoted a heavy bar 2, which is coupled to the mast and swings with it to balance the wind pressure, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The bar is secured to the shaft 3, on which the mast is loosely mounted. The mast is adjustably secured to a segment on the shaft by cords 25, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, and may be further secured by a pin 12 passing through both. This pin may also be passed through some fixed part of the boat to lock the mast in the upright position. Both the fore-sail and the main-sail are, preferably, triangular, and are spread by sprits or booms 18, 19, which, as shown in Figs. 9 and 11, are bolted between jaws on a sleeve 15. This sleeve rotates between collars on a metal bushing on the mast. By removing two of the bolts, the booms can be swung up alongside the mast. The invention is equally applicable to two-masted boats, a shaft similar to 3 being arranged at the stern for the after mast.
