Abstract

14,891. Whiting, P. July 22. Couplings, disconnectible.-A hose coupling, particularly applicable for connecting together short sections of hose between cars in air-brake systems, is shown in side view and plan in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Fig. 3 shows one of the two identical members 1, 1<a> in section. When the members are coupled up, the transversely-tapered tongue 27 of one member is inserted between the flange 19 and the head 25 of the other member, and the valve stem 8 is pressed upwards, so opening the spring-pressed valve 7. When the cars are uncoupled, nr the hose coupling is straightened out, the lips 24<a> on the heads 25 traverse passages 24<b> in the turned-up lips 24 on the ledges 23, and the members pull apart, and the valves 7 are seated by their springs. Each member 1, 1<a> is provided with a rubber gasket 31, Fig. 6, between the plate 28 and the rim 30. The gasket has a boss 32 and an inclined portion 35, which tapers from near the edge of the boss. The valve stem 8 passes through the aperture 9, and can slide within the recess 13 in the screwed cap or nut 14.
