A rod B is fed between jaws A and clamped while the projecting portion is upset to the desired thickness, Fig. 3, by a double punch c, c<1>. The rod is then unclamped, and the inner punch c' moved forward to punch the rod out of the head, leaving the washer on the punch, from which it is stripped by withdrawing the punches till they are again flush as in Fig. 1.
