Abstract
13,460. Mackean, W., and Walker, E. July 2. Incandescent gas &c. lamps.-The burning and seasoning of mantles is effected by upper and lower burners b, e, e', between which the mantles are mounted on hooks l projecting from a bar l<1> carried by sliding brackets h<3>. During this mounting operation the pivoted pipes or upper burners e, e<1> are turned in the direction of the arrow. Gas is then supplied to the burners e, e<1> through the cocks m, c, ignited, and the burners are swung back to the position shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the mantles are ignited by the flames. The lever g<3> is then shifted so that one of the friction cones g<1> on a shaft g driven by any convenient motor is brought into gear with the cone g', which, by means of the worm gear g<5>, rotates the cams g<6>, g'. The effect of this is to lower the sliding brackets h<3> and to cut off the gas supply to the burners e, e<1>. When the mantles have descended well over the burners b, and before the flame which has been travelling down the mantles arrives at the bottom thereof, the three-way cock c is turned by the cam g<7> to supply gas to the burners b, which are kindled by the pilot jets, and the seasoning of the mantles commences. The brackets h<3> may be allowed to descend and ascend more than once, if necessary, for proper seasoning. Each burner b consists of a central tube b<1> surrounded by a tube b<2> forming an annular passage to a number of supplementary jets or holes b<3>.
