12,170. Price, C. W. June 14. Counting-apparatus.-Relates to devices for counting the number of words written by a typewriter. Mounted in suitable bearings beneath the base of the machine is a rock-shaft d, which bears at its rear end an arm h, and at its front end an arm which carries a flanged slide c movable by means of a button g. Normally the flange lies beneath the stem a<1> of the space key a, but it can be put out of action by means of the button g when the space key is to be repeatedly depressed. The arm h lifts a rod m each time it returns under spring control from the depressed position, and the upper end of the rod m actuates the pusher l<1> of the counting-apparatus i. The pusher is linked to the pawl-carrying lever k, which gives movement to the ratchet-wheel k<3> on the primary shaft of a train of gearing. Pointers indicating units, hundreds, and thousands of words move over three dials on the face of the counter. Fig. 7 shows the mechanism for simultaneously returning the pointers to zero. It comprises a press-button n, pivoted plate 0 bearing fingers o, and heartshaped cams p fixed in the ordinary way to the axles of the pointers.
