Damping and affixing labels and the like.- Relates to apparatus for applying gum, paste, &c. to separate sheets of paper &c. for use as labels &c. for bottles and in box-making, bookbinding, &c. An endless band a of suitable waterproof material, is coated on its outer surface with the adhesive material contained in a trough d, from which it is transferred to the band by a roller c, the thickness of the deposit being regulated by a scraper e. Beneath one of the guiderollers b over which the band turns sharply, as shown, is placed a receptacle f containing a pile of sheets to be pasted. The receptacle may have adjustable sides, and is pivoted so that its forward end is pressed continuously against the band a. The band picks up each sheet in succession by its forward edge, and, during the motion of the band, the sheet is laid upon it and carried to a suitable point, where it can be removed and used in the manner desired. The bottom of the pivoted receptacle f is provided with fingers g<1> which pass between blades h on the frame, the upper edges of the blades approaching the band sufficiently close to prevent more than one sheet from leaving the receptacle at one time. The receptaclef may be oscillated by cam mechanism, so that the sheets are applied to the band at intervals. The apparatus may be used for applying adhesive material to continuous webs of paper &c. Speed cones and clutches are provided for regulating the speed of the band, and for starting and stopping it as desired.
