This support fits in the upper end of a tube 7 in the burner, and the air inlet holes 8 are controlled by a cap 9. The tube 5 may be of metal, kaolin, or other refractory material, but is preferably made of metal and either coated or covered with kaolin or the like, or loosely enveloped in a supplementary mantle 10 of closely-woven refractory material which will become incandescent when the burner is lit.
