Conductors.-To allow for the variations in length, due to heat, of electric conductors and trolley wires 3, they are suspended at intervals by springs 4 or other yielding devices. At intermediate points the wires may be held by clamping-plates 8 slotted at 10 to allow motion over the support 9. Guides of insulating or conducting material enable the trolley to pass the springs 4. These guides may be fixed to the wires &c., or, as shown in Fig. 5, they may be built up of wooden or other plates 15, 5 with slotted connections at 20 to allow longitudinal motion. In case a wire breaks, it is earthed or short-circuited to the return by the motion of the wire bringing loops 11 on the support 8 into contact with a fixed bow-shaped piece 12, as in Fig. 3, which is connected to the earth or the return. Or the loops 11, 14 on the two wires may engage each other as in Fig. 4, so that a breakage of either or both will cause short-circuiting.
