Be it known that I, EDWARD H. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cramers Hill, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Crossings for Trolley-Wires of Electric Railways, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflcient form of bridge for guiding the trolley at points where two lines of electric railway cross each other, a further object being to prevent burning of the insulating block, forming part of said bridge structure. These objects I attain in the Vmanner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view ot a crossing for electric railways constructed in 'accordance with my invention, the view being taken from the top. Fig. 2, is a similar view looking from the under side of the device. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section, partly in elevation, of part of the device. Fig. 4,isaper spective View of the central insulating block. Fig. 5, is an enlarged transverse section on the line 5 5, Fig. 3; and Fig. 6, is an enlarged transverse section on the line 66, Fig. 3.
A and B represent the wires or electrical conductors of two electric trolley railway lines which cross each other at right angles, andD is acentral block or plate of vulcanized fiber or other available insulating material which carries two pairs of projecting arms A and B', the arms A projecting in line with the conductorA and the arms B projecting in line with the conductor B, each of said arms being suitably connected at its inner end to a block or plate a. which is secured to the central block D.
Upon the arms A and B are formed jaws b which embrace or partially i embrace. the wires A or B as shown in Fig. 6, and upon the plate a are other jaws CZ which likewise embrace the wires A orB so that the entire crossing structure is hung upon and supported by the conductor wires. The jaws d of one pair of plates a (preferably those of the arms A) are higher than the other pair of jaws so as to carry one of the conductors above the other at the crossing point. On the under side of the central block D is a plate f which has a central pin g and four armst' which form continuations of the arms A B', but are separated therefrom by means of blocks m of insulating material suitably secured to the main block D. rlhe arms i are thus insulated from the arms of. which they form continuations so that the sparking point is transferred to a point outside the insulation instead of at the gap between the arms.

A crossing device of this character can be readily and cheaply manufactured, does not interfere with the continuity of the contact wires, and can be readily applied to the lat ter, after they have been strung and stretched, by simply bending the jaws b and cl around the wires after the crossing ldevice has been adjusted into its proper position thereon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Thecornbination in a crossing device for electric railways, of a central block or plate of insulating material having a series of` projecting arms forming continuations of the conductors and providedwith clamping devices for engaging said conductors, substanvtially as specified.
' 2.'The combination of the central insulating block or plate, the projecting arms and plates whereby said arms are secured to said insulating block, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the central insulating block, the projecting arms, and the plates whereby said arms are connected to said insulating block, both the plates and arms having jaws for embracing the conductor wires and suspending the crossing structure therefrom, substantially as specied. 4. The combination ofthe central insulating block, with the trolley guide arms carried thereby, and insulating blocks whereby the continuity of said guide arms is interrupted so that the inner ends of the arms adjacent to the crossing point receive no current, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the central insulating block, the trolley guide arms forming con- Ioo,
interposed between the projecting arms and the arms on the plate, substantially as specified.
