Abstract

2368. Imray, O., [Farbwerke vorm. Meister, Lucius, & Br³ning]. Feb. 4. Sulphuric anhydride.-Relates to an arrangement of known apparatus for manufacturing sulphuric anhydride by the contact process, the essential feature being that two or more contact chambers are used, the gases issuing from one being cooled, freed from sulphuric anhydride, and then again heated before passing to the next. In the form shown, the hot impure furnace gases containg sulphurous acid and oxygen pass from the furnace a through the dust chamber band purifiers c<1>, c<2>, c<3>, c<4>, c<5>, and are then returned through a set of pipes d contained within the dust chamber and constructed like the well-known econonizer. The purified and heated gases then pass through a contact chamber e<1>, and next to a counter-current apparatus f. Being thus cooled, they pass to an absorbing-apparatus g<1> in which the sulphuric anhydride is removed. The unabsorbed gases pass back to the counter-current apparatus to be heated, and thence pass to the second contact apparatus e<2>. They are next cooled in the cooler h, and the anhydride absorbed in the vessel g<2>. If desired, they may be again heated and passed through a third contact chamber. Other methods of arranging a similar apparatus are illustrated.
