Dec. 21 Bagasse.-After the greater part of the juice has been extracted, by means of a mill or press, from sugar cane, beet-root, sorghum, and other plants, the bagasse or like refuse is systematically exhausted with water, and finally dried by means of rollers, or a press, and used as fuel. The bagasse &c. may be subjected to the action of the water in a series of tanks worked so that, as the saccharine contents of the water increase, it is employed in treating less exhausted material in another tank of the series. If desired, the bagasse &c. may be conveyed through a series of tanks of water, and rollers may be mounted between the tanks for pressing the bagasse &c. as it passes from one tank to the next in the series.
