Abstract
22,106. L o c k, W. H., and B a r r, M. Dec. 5. Engraving.-Relates to engraving-machines such as are specially adapted for cutting or engraving type, linotype, and like matrix punches. The tracer rod 1, partly shown in Fig. 6, is provided with a joint 2 of the type described in Specification No. 7540, A.D. 1898. The point is carried on the horizontal part 6 of a bracket, the vertical part 7 of which moves in V-groove ball races and is adjusted by means of a nut 11, screw 12, vertical scale, and divided head &c. 14. The work-table 24 moves in a frame 26 in V-groove ball races disposed at right-angles to similar races 27 for the frame, and by arranging the members of each pair of races in different parallel planes, as shown, the thrusts are all directed towards central vertical planes. The tracer rod 1 passes through the table 24, and is provided with a joint 120 similar to the joint 2. The punch-blank holder or chuck 29, Figs. 6 and 7, and a hardened bush 34 are received in a conical hole 28 in the holder 10, and a block 36 receiving the punch-blank is forced into a bore in the chuck up to an abutment 38. The chuck is provided with a hardened facing-disc 39, and a screwed pin 42 is used to protrude the blank for smoothing or rubbing down on Arkansas stone &c. A slide 44, Fig. 4, of the tool-holder is mounted in ball races, and moved in its guides 49 as follows :-A vertical rod 51 turns in a bracket 50, and is prevented from axial movement by a collar 52 and nut 53. The inner end of the rod 51 is threaded in a conical plug 58 fitting in a bore 57 of a piece 56 depending from an extension 48 of the slide 44. The plug 58 has a slit 61, head 59, and locking-nut 62 to adjust for wear. The outer end of the rod 51 has a milled head 65, and a loose graduated disc 66 with a spring detent 68 and locking-nut 69. The quill motor drives through pulleys 72, 74, 75 and a pin-drive 76 turning in a swinging arm 77 and engaging a hexagon nut 92 fast on a disc 99. The quill-holder 94, Fig. 9, receives a top conical piece 96 with two bearing- surfaces at different angles, and a bottom conical piece 97 fitting over a tubular prolongation 98 of the upper one as usual. The bottom end of the part 98 carries the disc 99, Figs. 4 and 9, which has notches 100 corresponding to the tool facets and used in the grinding operations. The quill 104 has closed slots 101 and an annular end 103, instead of the usual split end, and is screwed into the expanded end of a tube 105 fitted in the parts 96, 98 and squared at the outer end 107 so that it can be turned to collapse the quill top against the tool, a spline device 93 preventing turning of the quili. Lubrication of the quill-holder is effected by a stationary oil pan 108 sprung into an annular groove 109, and a spiral groove 110 and take-up pipe 111. An oil stop 112 is carried on the part 45, and excess of oil returns by a port 113. A shield 115 is also provided. Faulty contact between the work and tool is detected by a microphone, which is connected to terminals of a battery circuit including the work and tool. The parts 72, 74, 77, 49, Fig. 4, are insulated from the frame. According to the Provisional Specification, a vertical machine of the type described in Specification No. 11,894, A.D. 1885, is taken as a convenient example, but horizontal machines are not excluded.
