Shearing.-Relates to machines for cutting slots in cardboard, leather, thin sheet metal, &c. being specially applicable for slotting the blanks used iu the manufacture of cardboard boxes. The sheets are placed m a file on a table 14 between fixed and adjustable guides 18, 15, and are fed from the bottom by a reciprocating feed-bar 25 operated by an adjustable eccentric on the shaft 4. The sheet is fed between rotary cutters 9, 10 on the shafts 3, 4 connected by gearing and suitably driven. The cutters 10 on the lower shaft each consist of two knife-edged plates separated by a distance equal to the width of the slot required, and the corresponding upper cutter 9 consists of a squareedged plate or disc, which takes between the plates forming the lower cutter. The cutting-edge 11 of the upper cutter 9 extends round only a portion of the circumference of the cutter, and projects beyond the remaining portion, as shown ; or the upper cutter may have several projecting and cutting portions separated from one another, so that completely-closed slots may be produced in the material passed between the cutters. The cutters shown are intended for the cutting of slots which extend from the edge of a sheet to a greater or less distance at right-angles thereto, this distance being regulated by adjusting the position of the eccentric on the shaft 4, according to a suitablyarranged scale, by which the reciprocation of the feed-bar 25 is properly timed with regard to the position of the upper cutters 9. Both sets of cutters are adjustable along their shafts; the slotted sheets are guided as they issue from the machine by projecting guides 28 ; and the strips which are removed from the sheets and remain embedded between the plates of the lower cutters are removed therefrom by spring blades or pickers 30.
