Abstract

14,283. Golby, F. W., [Reichmann, F. A., and Lagerqvist, C. A.]. Aug. 9. Yarns, mercerizing. - Relates to means for mercerizing or imparting a silky lustre to yarns and fabrics of American or short staple cotton. The well gassed and cleaned material is steeped in a state of tension for ten minutes, or until the cotton assumes a dark blue colour, in soda lye of 80‹ C. and 45‹ B., which has been mixed with about 10 per cent. of a solution of copper oxide in ammonia. It is then rinsed with boiling water and then with cold water containing a little nitric acid. To complete the glossing effect, the material is laid for eight minutes, or until it assumes a pale yellow colour, in nitric acid of 35‹ B. and 5‹ C. It is then thoroughly washed and dried.
