Abstract

Auxiliary propellers for steamships.-Fig. 1 shows a transverse section of a vessel fitted with two auxiliary screw propellers, but one only may be employed. When not in use, the propellers are housed within tubes T, the outer ends of which may be fitted with valves as shutters. Each propeller is mounted in the forked end of a tube b, which can slide in the outer tube T and at its inner end is secured to a pair of racks gearing with pinions l. These pinions are rotated by hand to push or withdraw the tube b. The propeller is fast on a spindle, to which is keyed a sprocketwheel driven by a chain h from a sprocket-wheel on the propeller shafting s. Clutches may be used to couple the sprocket-wheels to the line shafting so that the auxiliary screws may be used to steer the vessel.
