Abstract
10,948. Butterworth, J., and Tonge, R. June 16. Pistons.-Relates to the type of piston having a Spring inside two rings. The spring, as shown in Fig. 1, is made in two parts, one coiled in a righthand spiral for the greater part of its length S and in a left-hand spiral A<2> for the rest of its length, and the other B<1> coiled in two equal right and left hand spirals. The shorter spring is screwed into the longer so as to bring it to the required diameter, and, when wear takes place, may be unscrewed slightly so as to expand the spring. The same principle may be applied to contractile, as well as to expanding, springs.
