10,673. Tilden, J. A. June 12. Moulding sugar.-A machine for moulding sugar into long flat blocks and cutting the blocks into slabs comprises a pressing-roller b and endless chains a<2>, supporting a series of transverse bars a, upon which are arranged a number of sugar-carrying plates A. The ends of the bars a travel upon, and are supported by, flanges formed upon the machine framing. Stationary dividing-plates c are fitted with circumferential grooves formed in the roller b, and are provided with projectious c<2>, which rest upon a transverse bar c<3>. The plates c are held in position by a removable bar c<4>, which carries a scraper b<6> for removing sugar from the roll b. Sugar adhering to the plates c is removed by slotted plates or scrapers c<6> carried by the bars a. The distance apart of the scrapers is equal to the length of one of the plates A which are pushed forwards by the scrapers. The sugar is fed to the plates A from a hopper d, provided with agitators d<4> and an adjustable shutter d<30>. The long flat blocks of compressed sugar formed by means of the rollers b are cut transversely by a knife e carried by a vertically-reciprocating block e<6>, which is mounted upon a slide e<2>. This slide is actuated by means of a lever e<3>, pivoted at e' to the slide, and arranged to engage with projections b<8> on the bars a. The return stroke of the slide e<2> is ejected by the action of a weight e<8>, mounted upon a rocking shaft e'‹ which carries an arm e<12>. The lever e<3> is released, to allow the weight e<8> to act, by a pin e, which bears against the lower side of the lever connected to the slide. During the forward stroke of the slide e<7>, the block e<6> and knife e are depressed by means of a cam groove f<4>, which directs the motion of a pin e<7> secured to the block e<6>. By means of these arrangements the knife e is moved laterally during the cutting-operation with a velocity equal to that of the sugar blocks. The roller b is hollow, and is heated by means of steam. Water of condensation may be discharged through radial passages communicating with the steam outlet. The plates c are heated by conduction from the roller.
