8803. Munger, E. E. May 12. Bedsteads, invalids' and hospital. The side and end bars C, C<3>, C<4> of the bottom are of inverted angle-iron. Brackets C' on the foot ends of the side bars have projections which fit between lugs on the collars D, and are secured by set-screws. Brackets C<2> at the head end are removably hung on collars D'. The spring mattress frame consists of side bars G<1> connected by end bars G<2> to which the spring surface is clamped. A stretcher F<3> fixed to the sides G<1> provides axles for a pair of wheels which run on the horizontal flanges of the rails C. Catches or turn-buttons on the bars G<2> rest on the flanges of the end bars C<3>, C<4>, and hold the frame G<1>, G<2> in the horizontal position, but may be turned to allow the frame to tilt. Two links H are pivoted to the bars G<1> and to the brackets C<2>. Braces I, pivoted to brackets on the bars C<3>, slide in guides pivoted to the sides G'. Spring catches, simultaneously disengaged by pulling a cord J<3>, J<4>, engage holes in the braces I, and so hold the frame G<1> in any position in which it may be set. A pivoted U-shaped canvas-covered frame K, K<4>, to which the edges of the bed or mattress, placed on the spring surface, may be clamped, is adjusted and held in place by a quadrant K working in a socket and fixed by a set-screw. A seat N has on its underside a pair of brackets in which bear grooved rollers. The seat may be inserted through the cranked parts B<2> of the foot pillars and gaps in the vertical flange of the bar C<3>, and its rollers may be made to run on the vertical flanges of the side bars C. When in the position shown, notched bars pivoted to the brackets may engage the pivots on the stretcher F<3>; the notched bars may be disengaged by pulling a cord. Leg-rests 0, pivoted to the seat, may be held at any angle by straps O<3> engaging studs on the foot end frame. A bed-pan may be inserted into a slit in the mattress, and a seat S' fitted. The bed-pan has a discharge pipe S'. The rails Q, carried by hinged arms Q', may be turned up and be secured together by bands or webs P which pass under the patient. By rotating one or both of the rails Q by chain and sprocket gearing and a crank, or by a crank and worm gearing, the patient can be lifted so that his bedding may be changed. When the patient is lifted, a bowed crossstretcher may be fitted to the rails Q to prevent them from bending inwards.
