Abstract
8481. Talbot, B. May 8. Basic processes; open-hearth processes.-In the manufacture of iron aud steel, by an open-hearth process, a layer of molten slag rich in oxide of iron is maintained on the surface of the bath of metal. The process may be conducted in a tilting- furnace, connected with regenerators, portions of purified molten metal being withdrawn periodically, while crude iron is poured in a molten state through the slag layer into the furnace charge. Portions of the slag may be drawn off periodically, and replaced by additions of mill cinder, scale, iron ore, and lime, or. limestone. When a fixed open-hearth furnace is employed, a small charge of oxidizing- slag and purified metal is introduced into the furnace, and periodical additions of crude iron and oxides are made until the furnace has received its full charge. Two or more furnaces may be used, a charge, or portion thereof, being tapped from one furnace into another for final treatment.
