Bending.-A plate-bending machine of the kind described in Specification No. 2783, A.D. 1888, has the movable girder B pressed forwards by pairs of rollers D, carried by plates C on a ram E and acting on a vertical face B' on the girder and an inclined face A' on the frame A. The plates C may be replaced by a solid wedge, rollers being placed between the wedge and the faces A', B<1>. To facilitate the bending of narrow strips, such as butt-joint strips for boilers, into a tubular form, the front portion A of the frame is stayed by a cross-bar G on bolts F, pivoted at H, to allow of the insertion and removal of the plate from above. The crossbar and bolts are balanced by a weighted lever I. For holding narrow strips vertical while being bent, such as strips for the longitudinal joints of boilers, guide-stops K, Fig. 3, are removably secured in suitable positions on the girder B. A plate may be automatically fed through the machine by an intermittently-operated chain, as described in Specification No. 21,294, A.D. 1896, the chain being operated by a ram L and pulley sheaves. The ram is caused to make a short stroke after each operation of the machine by the action of a small pump M supplying the ram, and operated by a lever N and tappets 0 on one of the draw-back rods P of the girder. The tappets are adjustable to vary the stroke.
