7282. Limb (dit Claudius), C. M. J. Nov. 27, A.D. 1899, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Calcium, strontium, and barium carbides are obtained by subjecting the corresponding sulphide, or substances which will produce the sulphide when heated, along with carbon and a metal, such as iron, or a metallic oxide, to intense heat, such as that of an electric furnace. Barium carbide, thus made, may be decomposed by water, preferably boiling water, to form acetylene, the residue left, which consists of baryta, being crystallized out.
